Who knew there were so many ways to create relief in art? These mini projects were a fun (and pretty simple) way to practice for our main project. Since I was not here for this part of the class last year, it will hopefully help on my final project. The most difficult materiel was the cardboard since there were many different textured layers to go through. Overall, the others went pretty easily (even if they did not turn out perfect). I think out of these three the easiest (and most successful) was my clay sunset, which I can't wait to glaze!
This was my first try at making styrogami. That being said, I think it was successful! I had little to no idea what I was doing, other than my other "skills" from Sculpture 1 (keep in mind I was not in the class the first week last year). I think it was successful because I used many carving/cutting techniques and did not give up. I also think it was an achievement because I stuck to my original idea and did not change along the way, like I have done with past projects. Lastly, this was a success because I have learned from mistakes made this time and l will not make them with future projects.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, yes this WAS the first artist I saw on This Is Colossal. But aside from that, it did inspire me for many reasons. FIrst of all, being in Sculpture 2, I have to pick a theme to stick by all semester; for my theme, I am leaning towards "food". That being said, I think the artist Elliot Walker fits that niche well! According to his website (http://www.elliott-walker.com/), Elliot is from London but lives in New York City, NY, an MFA degree in Design from "The School of Visual Arts" and a BA in English literature of all things from NYU. He works with many materials such as molten glass (as seen below), paper, shirts, and computer animation. I find him inspiring because of this vast material use and specific to these pieces below, the pops of color and strange sense of realism mixed with abstract-ness. Elliot Walker is a very interesting artist, and I would like to see more of his work!
